The Whitening Myth

THE SKIN! Human beings are born with a specific color of skin, basically of the color of their parents or of what we call the Race of the family or of their own country or continent in a broader sense. The White, The Black and The Brown are how they are distinguished as THE RACE. The newer colors of skins of the past few decades are the newer breeds of Humans. An American marries an African and gives birth to a Blackish White. An European White marries an African; the offspring is Whitish Black. Indians are recognized as the Brown, and we still recognize the North Indian Brown and South Indian Brown as a different race. Even an Indian when cross bred with a White or a Black the offspring’s skin color will be Brownish White or Brownish Black. So we all know as to of what skin we have born.
There have been wars on Religion for centuries among the human race; the next reason for wars is the Racial War. Such is the dangerous depth of the most delicate superficial layer of the body – The Skin. The next in line are the wars on territorial and border disputes of countries, and also wars on languages of what people speak.
Now what is The Myth?  Humans know from which racial skin they are born of, but most of them still want to have a better look of their Skin and especially the face skin. They see their own skin with their own naked eyes of their hands or other parts of their body innumerable times; but they are much bothered of the face skin that too seen through the mirror. The face is seen in the mirror so many times; maybe the mirror itself is bored of seeing the faces of people. What else can the mirror do; it shows exactly as to what color the skin is. People still want the color of the skin especially of the face to be whitened – this is The Myth.
The myth is most common among the women folk that are evident since ancient times.  You see the “Darpana Sundari” (a woman half dressed in dancing pose holding a mirror in the hand and seeing her face) in the ancient sculptures of India. That’s the proof.
In front of a modern dressing mirror we find tens of boxes and bottles of various types of powders, facial crèmes, face masks, face pads, foundations, fairness crèmes, oils,  whitening lotions etc;. The investment is in thousands or sometimes in lakhs of Rupees or Dollars which does not yield any interest on the investment; except in the interest of the Myth. People know of what color their skin is, but though, would still like to whiten it adapting to so many methods, the Make-Up using Cosmetics, Medicines, Facial Applications etc; to whiten the skin. Here it is not to be confused and misunderstood that it is a generic subject, but on the contrary it is a fact.
Now who would not like to look nice, almost everybody wants, so accordingly they spend the hard earned money. There are so many companies manufacturing these aids to whiten the skin, and they vigorously advertise to sell. In a way thanks to the Myth which helps and contributes towards the profitability of such companies and is a bread earning source to so many.
It is natural that the skin gets a little darkened when exposed to sunlight; from day-one of a child when it starts playing outside in the sunlight the darkening starts. The darkness is not as much to have changed the whole color of the skin. It is a temporary phase. The madness to change the color to whiten the skin is ridiculous.
One can know the original color of their skin in three ways. The first one is to see the covered parts of the body like the chest or the thighs. The second is to see themselves when they are not exposed to sunlight for many days, especially when somebody is ill for some time or for other reasons. The third is to ask your parents or any elder who has taken you on his chest when you were a baby.
Some tips to maintain the original skin color: Wash the face in cold water three to four times in a day, Drink lots of Water, Check on your Habits, Maintain your Cool, Have enough Rest and Sleep, Eating more of Green Vegetables, less of oily stuff and junk food, One fruit every night, Minimize the exposure to sunlight, Control your Temperament, Early morning brisk walk, little bit of Yoga or a Swim, have Contentment. Just do all this for a few days and check the texture of the Skin; you will be confident and willing to continue it for days & days to come. That is the result to a Healthy body and Healthy mind and that’s  the reflection on the face and facial skin.
True! The using of whitening lotions or crème gives a good feeling, cause of the chemicals used and the fragrance which makes the senses satisfy.
So! No need to spend much on whitening the skin. Understand your Complexion and Do as above.
Save Money.

Loved it. If only we humans could rise above color discrimination and not hanker after fair skin, be satisfied with what we have, look after what we have been gifted with today’s scenario would be so different. There would be peace and no wars would have been fought, no colonial rules and no slaves taken in. God had gifted humans with brain which is being used for all wrong things racial discrimination included….

What you said is commendable about the gifts God has given. They have always been misused and shall be. Racial discrimination is one we should be ashamed of as humans. But the fact remains….

Erika I had to tell it that way only because you are also in the beautifying industry. Yes it is true that where you live and in many places of the west it has been a trend past a few decades now that they want to darken the skin by unnatural means. The comments I am getting from some in the west have said about the tanning of the skin and that it so dangerous too.
My main purpose of this post was to convey that the original skin color is the one to be maintained, be it White, Black or Brown.

Oh yes, I got the meaning, Shiva, I just did not know about that bleaching trend. ButI agree: Changing something so profound like the original skin color actually says that the person is not accepting themselves as they are and the root lies a lot deeper.

No need to whiten or darken your natural colour. What you are born with is what you are, and one is beautiful when they are comfortable in one’s own skin – not trying to be something that one is not! All chemical and artificial alterations make one UGLY!!!

Makeup / cosmetics are meant to ENHANCE one’s beauty, not cover it!

You speak some truths here, but I bristle at the lie that “white is right.” Being pale is meaningless…especially if one isn’t born pale / albino!

Somehow I feel that it is the glow of a face that is more attractive than the colour of the skin. That glow has a calming and soothing effect on the observer too. This is more pronounced in the case of very old people, some of whom have very sweet and radiant faces. I think it is mainly the result of mental peace and harmonious life.

Very nice writing Shiva as always and I have to say this skin whitening thing is not so much here where I am from as is tanning to keep skin darker! Its the exact opposite! and very bad for a person’s skin and health. Seems some that have darker skin wish it lighter and the lighter wish to be darker…me I happie exactly as is! Some women go to the tanning booths so much and use special weird lotions to amplify the tanning that they end up looking almost orange! No kidding! Like they rolled in Doritos or cheese puffs! its awful but it becomes an obsession with them and they ruin their skin and their face shows age before they even are old they look it! Personally, I do love the look of a person’s natural beauty (unless we are talking hair than in that case yes mine changes colors often hehe) But to mess with bleach on your face or risk skin cancer from tanning booths or too much sun just not a good way to live. I am like you I only wash my face with water and it seems to be working just fine! XO!! I hope you are having a restful night of sleep and all the good dreams one man could have! 🙂

As others have noted here, those of us who are pale want to be tan. I have always wished I had what we call here “olive” skin as it seems more even and goes well with clothing. Being too white is a problem and those of us with Northern genes tend to burn in the sun, which isn’t very good either.

Thank you for this interesting post.

I understand now it should go with the clothing too.
To give you a surprise, the brown skin we Indians say we have does make slightest differences from region to region which we can make and get to know, though we differ by a few kilometres away from each other. This is Amazing don’t you think so?
I am happy all agree to have it the natural way.
Of course that color of the skin has come due to the living in those areas for centuries, isn’t?

This is definitely a case of ‘the grass is greener on the other side’ .. or so we think… When we have darker skin we want to lighten it and when we have paler skin, we want to darken it so here in the UK we have youngsters obsessed with going for sunbeds which are dangerous for their skin.. so they can look suntanned… It’s the same with our hair.. and I’m definitely guilty of that.. I’ve been blonde, red, brown, and nearly black at different times over the years… and I’m definitely ‘covering the grey’ now! Maybe one day we’ll be satisfied in our own skin or we’ll all end up somewhere in the middle where we can live in harmony and peace with ourselves and those around us regardless of our skin colour, religion, race or hair colour! We can keep hoping and connecting in the meantime.. xx

😃 That was a very frank opinion. A will to connect regardless of our skin colour, religion, race and hair is commendable.
Your comment here shall hold so good and an inspiration to others who shall read this post Wendy!
      Thanks

    Gros bisous

    Bernard

I love where you wrote that maybe the mirror is bored looking at you..ha that was hilarious. Funny, being white I have invested in tanning agents so as to give myself a tan and not be so white. Especially now since they say lying in the sun can cause cancer. But you are so right about all of the items we use on our face, mostly women, to keep wrinkles away, to keep it moistened, foundations, eyeshadows, etc. We should all take your advice above and have healthy skin the natural way! 🙂 Great post!!

Wonderful, Wonderful Article Shiva. Exactly what most women today need to know and hug themselves for their own skin color and the joy that they are to be with. I dislike makeup inherently and I am mostly my simple self with no makeup and I feel left out in the herds of beauties around me then I smile and remember that it is my choice and I like it that way only. Thanks for filling me up with happiness through your words. This is a beautiful article, sharing it on twitter. 🙂

Have a good night. Sweet dreams. 🙂

As a Dark Skinned Black Woman I used to get picked on and bullied a lot in school because of my dark complexion. I’d come home crying. My Dad would comfort me with this saying, “The Darker the Berry the Sweeter the Juice. If the Berry is too light it has no use.”

Now that I’m older I’ll be 58 next month I’m very grateful for my Dark Skin because I don’t have lines or wrinkles. Most of the time I’m mistaken for being in my 30s or 40s despite the fact that I’m almost 60!!

      BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL
I vote for what Dad said.
I just adorn the Black skin for many reasons.
As for me it is the same with me people mistake me to be so as like yours. I am just two years older to you. And always feel I am in my twenties.
      THANKS

Your name is DeBorah is it.
Yes we should. Skin the most superficial layer of our body as mentioned in the post makes such a helluva difference in the thinking.
I am blessed to receive your graceful and peace blessings, thankyou so much DeBorah!
          Fondest Regards,
